One of the best ways to improve your overall performance on the CAHSEE is by learning and utilizing effective studying techniques. While some of the steps may seem obvious or redundant, they all work together to help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your preparation time.

The most important studying tip to remember is to start early. Give yourself plenty of time before the exam to prepare thoroughly for every section that will be covered. If it makes it easier for you, create a set schedule outlining how much time you plan to devote to studying each week. The schedule can be adjusted, as needed, as you go if you feel you need more time each week to prepare. You can also adjust the time down if you feel you are trying to take on too much at one time.

Pick a set spot to study that is well lit, comfortable, and as free from outside distractions as possible. By creating a relaxed and suitable environment to study in, your will be able to devote more time to studying than to responding or reacting to sounds or interruptions around you. A well lit area is also an ideal way to reduce eye strain.

Once you have determined how many hours a week you need to study as well as which location you want to devote to studying, pick a specific time of day to try and devote to the task. Never try and study right before bed when you’re already tired. It is also not recommend to study right before mealtime, when your mind is more focused on food than study.
