If a pipe broke or came loose, you may have come home to a lovely waterfall coming from your ceiling. The water from this type of issue is clean water and although it makes a mess, it’s relatively easy to deal with.

First, turn off the water! Then get a wet vac or shop vac and suck up as much water as possible from the carpet. Move any furniture standing on the wet carpet to dry ground and be sure to check upholstered furniture to make sure it did not soak up water that may damage the wooden frame. Once you have as much water as possible removed from the carpet and all the furniture out of the way, roll the carpet up until you are beyond the affected area. Now use the wet vac to removes as much water from the padding underneath as possible then return the carpet. Use a rotating floor fan to blow air across the carpet to help speed up the drying process and in a day or two the carpet should be almost as good as new.

If the water damage was not confined to a small area, or there was standing water, be sure to discard the carpet and padding after removing as much water as possible. Then use a fan to dry the bare wood floor completely before installing new carpet and padding. Don’t rush into purchasing new carpet however. Think about different types of flooring or even just get a lot of carpet samples to consider before you rush in.

If the damage is from a broken sewer or waste water line, call in the professionals immediately. The bacteria and organisms in dirty water can cause serious illness to everyone in your home.
