The Story of the Mini Skirts

After the second world war, by the late 1950s, a more youthful population emerged. Most of the baby boomers are already on their teenage years and such is reflected in their culture. This has reinforced the emergence of new consumer demographics and new consumer voices. This can also be reflected even in the manner of clothing. Rock and roll and other liberated concepts have surfaced and affected lives in many ways.

During the 1960s, teenagers became more accepted in the society. This term has almost not been used in the previous decade. The fashion trend has also been directed towards being stylish and comfortable, such as what has been reflected in the shortened skirts.

During this period, shirt length is dependent on its use. In sports, shorter skirts were common to allow women to move easily. In casual clothing, the trend for short skirts were initiated by the likes of John Bates, Andre Courreges, and Mary Quant. Quant made the short skirt popular when she opened her store in London. The trend was quickly followed by Yves St. Laurent. The shows on TV during the 60s were also considered major influences. This has exposed women wearing such piece of clothing, making the mini popular in different places. The trend was introduced in the U.S. by Gernreich.

In the 1970s, the trend also gave way for mid and full length or maxi skirts. However, feminists were against mini skirts as they are seen as a sign of liberation.

In the 1980s, the trend for mini skirts was back as it became more evident in media such as films and TV. Even music videos from popular groups have used minis. Madonna, a musical icon who became famous in the 1980s, on her song “Like a Virgin”, wore a mini dress.

Today, in the 21st century, mini dresses are still popular as they are often used on TV shows like Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives.

The fifty years of mini skirt has gone a long way as it has also transformed in many ways. Mini skirts have also been more formal as they can now be worn on formal events such as a dinner date. Mini skirts have also been trendier as they are worn during parties and in clubs. It can be worn with leggings, jeans, and even for sports such as tennis. With all of these, expect the mini skirt to stay through the years.
